Coronaviruses

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that can cause respiratory illness in humans. They get their name, “corona,” from the many crown-like spikes on the surface of the virus. Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and the common cold are examples of coronaviruses that cause illness in humans.

COVID-19 infection can be transmitted through droplets of different sizes: larger droplet particles are referred to as respiratory droplets, while smaller ones are referred to as aerosolized. While it is still considered that the primary mode of transmission between people is through respiratory droplets and contact routes, more and more studies suggest that airborne spread is also highly likely, especially in crowded spaces, with poor natural or mechanical ventilation.
